The Blackfeet called it the Land of Shining Mountains. Lewis and Clark in their quest for the Pacific, failed to find a route through these formidable peaks.
Yet for centuries native hunters followed ancient routes to hunting grounds on both sides of the continental divide.
Today you can experience Glacier National Parks visual drama from the scenic roadways that follow these ancient routes. Visitors marvel at the stunning change in scenery between the western slopes cedar forests and the prairie grasslands on the eastern side. In Between stand the glacier-carved peaks and lush alpine meadows of the Rocky Mountains.
Year-round access is granted by Highway 2, which follows the parks southern boundary over Marisa Pass. The famous Going to the Sun Road is a spectacular summer only route that travels through the heart of the park. This 55 mile scenic parkway winds its way up and over the Continental Divide. From Lake McDonald to St Mary, Going to the Sun Road reveals the glory of Glacier National Parks high alpine terrain to all that find them way to this magnificent landscape.
In 1932, Glacier National Park in Montana and Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta were formally joined to form Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the worlds first. A Rotary International initiative, the designation celebrates the peace and friendship that exists between Canada and the US. It highlights the fact that nature knows no political boundaries.
It was George Bird Grinnell, the father of Glacier National Park who coined the phrase, Crown of the Continent. Today it is the formal name of the ecosystem that encompasses Glacier and Waterton parks. The bio-diversity found here is one of the highest in North America.
This is the Crown, the birthplace of the great rivers of the continent, their waters flow into three different oceans. The climate creates its own ecological conditions which result in the presence of flora and fauna unique in the world. Outstanding natural features remain habitat for abundant and spectacular wildlife, from the mighty grizzly bear to rare species of butterflies.
The Going to the Sun Road is the highlight of the park. Driving on this road is what all the tourists do. Or if you do not want to drive you can take a tour bus and let them do the driving for you. There are a couple companies that offer the tour. The most popular is the one with the red tour buses of a forgotten era. If you like mountain scenery, take the tour. If you drive you will be too buy keeping you eyes on the road. And that is not what you want to look at.
There are not too many places to stay around the park. You might just want to stay in the park itself. There are a few nice hotels in the park. All the surrounding areas, especially on the east and south are run by the Blackfeet tribe. Their reservation borders the park on the east.

Fishing on rowboats and outboards is the boat fishing combination you probably will use the most. It’s the most economical when you’re the skipper and you can go where fancy dictates, you can run up on a sandy beach for a swim and lunch or just to stretch your legs. You cannot do these things in any other boat you can hire for a day. Not at these prices.
A rowboat without the outboard costs from two to five dollars a day, depending on where you are, size of the boat, weekday or weekend.
But for family fishing, be wise and consider the outboard a must. Venture out with only oars to propel you when you’re alone or only Andy is with you, and then only when the water is placid. The kicker should rent for from five to ten dollars a day. It ought to be seven to ten horsepower. Don’t settle for any that’s less than five.
Never leave the livery without first taking the necessary safety precautions. Here are the musts of rowboat-outboard fishing.
1. Rowboats are usually from twelve to sixteen feet long. When Mother, Andy and Peg are with you hire no less than a fourteen – or sixteen – footer, preferably the latter.
2. Make sure the livery gives you a spare can of gas and make sure the motor tank is full.
3. The Coast Guard says each person aboard must have a Coast Guard approved life jacket or buoyant cushion. The boat station must provide them. See that it does. Make the kids wear their jackets no matter how much they holler.
4. Take a long length of clothesline with you. Kids being kids, it might turn out to be a lifeline.
5. Don’t move around in the boat. Don’t stand up, either. Dad sits in the stern manning the tiller; Mother sits in the bow and handles the anchor. Andy and Peg share the center seat.
6. Don’t go outside, meaning even two feet out to sea. Stay within the shelter of land.
7. Don’t ever take a fifth person with you. In an emergency, you’ll have your hands full taking care of four. A rowboat wasn’t built for five and you’re more apt to have an emergency.
8. Don’t cast. Flying hooks are dangerous to people around you.
9. Take along a first aid kit.
10. Be sure to have a pair of oars. Something could go wrong with the motor.
11. If a sudden storm comes up get onto the nearest shore fast, whether it has shelter from rain or not. You may get wet but you’ll be on land.
12. If you go ashore for a lark, allow for a changing tide when mooring or you may find your boat high and dry.
13. If you or anyone else falls overboard, cling to the boat. Don’t budge from it, no matter how close by that shore seems to be. You may be a good swimmer but you can’t stay afloat as well as a boat.
14. Learn the rules of safe navigation; they’re available free at any Coast Guard station and lots of other places. And obey them. You may not own the boat but you’re responsible for the safety of your family.
15. Always remember this when on the water: If you’re careless there can be no tomorrow.

just got a labradoodle puppy 6 weeks old, the reason we got her was for my husband to have a hunting dog, he waterfowl hunts and other birds. we chose the labradoodle because she is hypoallergenic and his allergies are really bad, and so far she is not bothering him. we could really use some good tips on teaching her to hunt. we do not have property, we live in a suburban area so please keep that in mind. help.
Your have all sorts of problems here….no dog is hypoallerginic especially not mixes despite what their so called breeders like to claim. The dog is just as likely if not more likely to have the labs high shed coat as it is to have the poodles low shed coat when it matures so be prepared to deal with allergies. Not only that but the breeder placed a 6 week old puppy. No even halfway responsible breeder places puppies under 8 weeks old. You got the dog as a working gun dog but does the dog have field lines behind it, any field trials behind it even just on the Lab side of the lines (yes Poodles are also bird dogs but find one that will work is a long shot) Just because the dog is a Lab mix (or even a purebred Lab for that matter) doesn’t mean it will hunt or retrieve properly. Good hunting dogs come from good hunting lines. If you have any chance of getting her to be even a half way decent hunting dog the start working with a professional trainer that trains hunting dogs, even the best dogs need to be trained under someone that knows what they are doing. Other than that be prepared to have noting more than a pet and your husband needs to be prepared to go on major allergy medication.
